Historians to Discuss Spain during World War II

Two historians will share their research on the significance of a Spanish subgroup during the Nazi regime.

The talk will be at 5 p.m. Sept. 18 in the Berry College Evans Auditorium. It is free and open to the public.

The discussion will primarily focus on the World War II German short film “In the Lands of the Basques”. Located in Northern Spain, the Basque region and its people fascinated the Nazi regime due to their unique language. The speakers, Santiago de Pablo and Virginia López de Maturana, are contemporary historians that teach in the Basque country.

De Pablo is a member of the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain and has been a scriptwriter for many historical documentaries. He has published several papers including “The Basque Nation On-Screen - Cinema, Nationalism, and Political Violence” and “The Basque Country through the Nazi Looking Glass”.

López de Maturana has authored “The Reinvention of a City: Power and symbolic politics in Vitoria during the Franco regime” as well as “Witness for the prosecution: The story of ETA and its victims on television”.
